Biography (read more)
Frank Bridge was an English composer, violist, and conductor active from the late Romantic period into the early twentieth century, born in Brighton and trained at the Royal College of Music in London. He worked professionally as an orchestral and chamber violist and as a conductor before devoting himself increasingly to composition, producing a substantial body of chamber music (string quartets, a cello sonata, piano sonatas), orchestral works, and songs. His style moved from an accessible late-Romantic, “Edwardian” idiom toward a more astringent, harmonically adventurous modernism after the First World War, shaped in part by pacifist convictions formed during the conflict. He died in Friston, East Sussex, in January 1941 and is buried in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin there.
Bridge is best remembered today both for his own finely crafted chamber and orchestral scores, such as the orchestral tone poem The Sea, and for his role as the principal composition teacher of Benjamin Britten, who credited him with instilling exacting technical standards and later paid tribute to him in the Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. While his later, more dissonant works were comparatively neglected in his lifetime, his output has undergone significant reappraisal, and he is now regarded as an important transitional figure bridging English late Romanticism and modernism.
