Life
Eduardo Egüez was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1959. He began on guitar with Miguel Ángel Girollet and Eduardo Fernández before studying composition and, in 1995, earning his lute diploma from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under Hopkinson Smith. A lutenist, theorbist, and guitarist acclaimed for interpretations of Bach, he has performed as a continuo player with ensembles including Hespèrion XXI, Concerto Italiano, and Café Zimmermann, and founded his own ensemble La Chimera. He teaches lute and basso continuo at the Zurich Conservatory and has recorded extensively for labels such as Naïve, Alia Vox, Arcana, and his own solo Weiss and Bach lute-works series on M.A. Recordings.
Impact
Eduardo Egüez’s recordings of the complete lute works of Bach and of Weiss’s late sonatas are regarded among the finest by a South American-born specialist, bringing a distinctive lyricism to Baroque lute repertoire. Through La Chimera and his teaching in Zurich, he has also pushed the field toward cross-cultural repertoire connecting early Iberian and Italian lute music with Latin American folk traditions.
