Biography (read more)

Giacomo Gorzanis was an Italian composer and lutenist. Little is known of his life. He was blind, and probably from a noble family. Similarities between his villanelle and those of Stefano Felis, Pomponio Nenna, and Giovanni Jacopo de Antiquis suggest he spent his early career at the Spanish court in Bari, in Puglia. He then settled in Trieste, where he received citizenship before 1567. He died there, with the exact year uncertain, sometime between 1575 and 1579.

Gorzanis published three books of lute tablature in Venice, in 1561, 1562, and 1564. A fourth, Opera nova de Lauto, followed around 1575–78. He also published two books of napolitane, in 1570 and 1571. In 1567 he issued a lute-tablature collection of two dozen passamezzi with some napolitane. His lute music has been recorded by Michele Carreca on the albums Œuvres pour luth seul (2017) and Lute Dances on Every Fret (2020).
