Biography (read more)

Catharina Josepha Pratten, known professionally as Madame Sidney Pratten (1824–1895), was a German-born guitar virtuoso, composer and teacher active in Victorian England. The daughter of guitarist and teacher Ferdinand Pelzer, she moved to England with her family as a child, began touring at age eight, and by her twenties was one of the best-known guitar teachers in the country, running her own guitar school and publishing several instructional method books.

Pratten composed roughly 250 works, mostly for solo guitar or voice and guitar, and her pupils included several members of the British royal family, among them Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Beatrice. Her work has enjoyed renewed attention in recent decades as part of the effort to recover the contributions of historical women composers to the guitar repertoire.
