Biography (read more)
Giulio Regondi (1822–1872) was a Swiss-born guitarist, concertinist and composer active chiefly in the United Kingdom. Born in Geneva to a German mother and Italian father, he was presented across Europe as a child prodigy of the guitar from around age six or seven; Fernando Sor dedicated his Souvenir d’amitié, Op. 46, to the nine-year-old Regondi in 1831. He later became a leading virtuoso of the English concertina, for which he wrote extensively, while continuing to compose and perform on guitar. He died in London.
Regondi’s guitar works — a set of etudes, variations, and larger pieces including the Introduction et Caprice, Op. 23 — are prized in the Romantic guitar repertoire for their virtuosity and lyrical writing, bridging the Classical guitar tradition of Sor and Giuliani with later 19th-century Romanticism.
