The Turtles were an American rock band from Los Angeles, evolving out of the group the Crossfires, with a lineup featuring Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman as the core vocalists. They scored a string of Top 40 hits in the late 1960s, including their only number-one single, “Happy Together” (1967), before disbanding in 1970 and later reuniting as “The Turtles Featuring Flo & Eddie.”

Pioneers of sunshine and psychedelic pop, the Turtles are also noted for a landmark 1989–1991 sampling lawsuit that established important legal precedent for music sampling royalties and credit.
