Biography (read more)
Sofia Gubaidulina (1931–2025) was a Soviet and Russian composer known for modernist, spiritually-inflected music spanning orchestral, chamber, and choral genres. Her Serenade for solo guitar, written to be relatively approachable and described by the composer as "music for pleasure," was included in a 1971 anthology of guitar works by Soviet composers and later reissued in Matanya Ophee’s Editions Orphée.
A rare solo-guitar work from one of the major composers of the late 20th century, the Serenade is valued for its improvisatory character and its exploration of the instrument’s full range.
