Biography (read more)

Sérgio Assad (born 26 December 1952 in Mococa, São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian guitarist, composer, and arranger. Born into a musical family, he learned Brazilian folk melodies from his father and by age fourteen was arranging and writing original compositions for the guitar duo he formed with his brother Odair. Together they perform as Sérgio and Odair Assad, widely known as the Assad Brothers.

Assad’s compositions and arrangements, blending Brazilian popular idioms with classical guitar writing, are core repertoire for guitarists worldwide. His younger sister Badi Assad is also a guitarist, and his daughter Clarice Assad is a composer and pianist. In 2021 he contributed to “The Walls,” a collaborative project with Yo-Yo Ma and dozens of classical guitarists.
