Biography (read more)
Piotr Anderszewski is a Polish pianist born 4 April 1969 in Warsaw to a father from the Polish aristocracy and a mother from a Jewish Hungarian family. He studied at the Chopin Academy in Warsaw and at conservatories in Strasbourg and Lyon, later spending a year at the University of Southern California and studying privately with Murray Perahia, Fou Ts’ong, and Leon Fleisher. He first drew wide attention at the 1990 Leeds International Piano Competition, when he walked off stage mid-performance in the semi-finals, dissatisfied with his playing of Webern’s Variations, Op. 27.
Anderszewski signed exclusively to Virgin Classics in 2000, and his recording of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations won a Royal Philharmonic Society award and an Echo Klassik; his later discs have earned a Gramophone Award, a Grammy nomination, and the 2012 BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Year. He is the subject of three documentary films by Bruno Monsaingeon exploring his relationship to Beethoven, Schumann, and his own Polish-Hungarian identity, and has championed the piano music of his compatriot Karol Szymanowski through recordings and festivals in Paris, New York, and London. He remains active as a soloist, chamber musician, and director from the keyboard with orchestras including the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
