Miklós Rózsa was a Hungarian-born composer who became a naturalized American citizen, active across the late Romantic and twentieth-century periods. Born in Budapest, he studied and worked in Germany, France, and Britain before settling in the United States in 1940, where he pursued what he called a “double life” between Hollywood film scoring and concert composition. His output includes nearly a hundred film scores—among them Spellbound, A Double Life, and Ben-Hur—alongside symphonic and chamber works such as his Violin Concerto and Cello Concerto. He died in Los Angeles in 1995, at the age of 88, following a stroke and pneumonia.

A three-time Academy Award winner among seventeen nominations, Rózsa was one of the most influential film composers of Hollywood’s golden age, pioneering orchestration techniques that shaped the sound of psychological thriller and historical epic scoring for later generations, including composers such as Jerry Goldsmith. His concert works, long overshadowed by his film career, have gained increasing recognition and performance in recent decades.
