Biography (read more)

Mieczysław Weinberg (also known as Moisey Vainberg) was a Polish-born Soviet composer of the 20th century, born in Warsaw and forced by the Second World War into successive relocations to Minsk, Tashkent, and finally Moscow, where he was based for the rest of his life. A prolific composer, he wrote at least 22 symphonies, 17 string quartets, operas including The Passenger, and numerous film and animation scores, most famously for the 1969 Soviet Winnie-the-Pooh cartoons. He died in Moscow in February 1996 after years of declining health from Crohn’s disease and a debilitating hip fracture.

Weinberg’s career, shaped by displacement, wartime loss, and a 1953 arrest on fabricated charges from which his close friend Dmitri Shostakovich helped secure his release, embodies the traumas faced by Jewish artists in the Soviet Union, and his music bridges Polish, Jewish, and Soviet traditions. Long overshadowed by Shostakovich’s example and largely neglected in the West during his lifetime, Weinberg has undergone a substantial international reassessment since the 1990s, with growing recognition of his sophisticated, emotionally searching output, particularly The Passenger, though he remains less performed than his stature warrants.
