Matthias Goerne

Matthias Goerne was born on 31 March 1967 and initially studied cello before switching to voice, training in Leipzig under Hans-Joachim Beyer and later with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. He made his professional debut in 1990 in Leipzig singing Bach’s St Matthew Passion and debuted at the Salzburg Festival in 1997.

Goerne is widely regarded as one of the leading interpreters of German art song of his generation, with the Chicago Tribune calling him “today’s leading interpreter of German art songs.” He recorded a comprehensive 12-CD Schubert lieder edition, received a Grammy nomination and multiple Diapason d’Or awards, was made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music, and has performed at the world’s major opera houses including the Royal Opera House, Vienna State Opera, and Metropolitan Opera.
