Biography (read more)

Marguerite Monnot (1903–1961) was a French composer and songwriter, trained as a classically educated pianist in Paris. She became one of the most important composers of French popular song in the mid-twentieth century, writing many of the melodies performed by Édith Piaf, including “Hymne à l’amour” (1949, with lyrics by Piaf), as well as the score for the stage musical Irma la Douce.

Monnot’s melodies for Piaf became standards of the French chanson repertoire, and pieces such as “Hymne à l’amour” have since been arranged for classical guitar, including a well-known arrangement by Roland Dyens, extending her music into the concert guitar repertoire.
