Macy Gray, born Natalie Renée McIntyre on September 6, 1967, in Canton, Ohio, is an American R&B and soul singer known for her distinctive raspy voice. After studying at USC, she signed with Epic Records in 1998 and released her debut album in 1999, scoring her breakthrough with “I Try,” which reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2001.

“I Try” made Macy Gray one of the defining voices of late-1990s/early-2000s neo-soul crossover pop; she has released ten studio albums and sold over 25 million records worldwide.
