John Towner Williams (b. 1932) is an American composer and conductor whose seven-decade career has produced many of the best-known scores in film history. His style blends romanticism, impressionism, and elements of atonal music with dense, virtuosic orchestration. He is best known for his long-running collaborations with directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, scoring films including the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park series, as well as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Jaws.

Williams is one of the most decorated composers in film history, and his themes have become part of the general musical vocabulary of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His score for Spielberg’s Schindler’s List (1993), and in particular its haunting main Theme, is widely regarded as one of the most emotionally powerful pieces of film music ever written and is frequently transcribed for solo instruments including classical guitar.
