Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson (September 19, 1969 – February 9, 2018) was an Icelandic composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who studied piano and trombone as a child and later languages and literature at the University of Iceland. He built his early career in Icelandic indie rock bands before co-founding the collective/label Kitchen Motors in 1999, and from 2002 released solo albums blending orchestral writing with electronic textures. He became internationally acclaimed for film scores, including Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival, and James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything, for which he won a Golden Globe.

Jóhannsson is credited as one of the most influential contemporary film composers of the 2010s, fusing minimalist classical technique with electronic production; on this site he is cross-referenced as performing artist on his own album track, complementing his fuller entry as a composer.
