Joseph Carleton Beal, a Massachusetts-born public relations professional, and James Ross Boothe, an American advertising writer, were amateur songwriters best known for co-writing the Christmas standard “Jingle Bell Rock” (1957), first recorded and popularized by Bobby Helms. Session guitarist Hank Garland and Helms later disputed the credited authorship, claiming the original Beal/Boothe song (“Jingle Bell Hop”) was substantially reworked into the hit version without their receiving credit.

“Jingle Bell Rock” became one of the most-played Christmas songs in American radio history, giving Beal and Boothe an enduring, if singular, place in the holiday-music songbook.
