Biography (read more)
Gerónimo Giménez was a Spanish composer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, born in Seville and raised in Cádiz before studying in Paris and settling in Madrid, where he worked as a conductor and composer. He specialized in zarzuela and sainete, the light operatic and comic theatrical forms popular in Spain, with La tempranica (1900) and La boda de Luis Alonso among his best-known works. He died in Madrid in 1923.
Giménez is remembered as a leading figure of the Spanish zarzuela tradition, whose lyrical, colorfully orchestrated stage works influenced younger Spanish composers including Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Turina, and Joaquín Rodrigo. His most popular zarzuelas remain part of the genre’s core repertoire in Spain today.
