Francesco Maria Veracini was an Italian violinist and composer of the late Baroque period, born and eventually dying in Florence, with significant working periods in Venice, London, and at the Dresden court. His output includes violin sonatas, chamber music, operas, orchestral overtures and suites, oratorios, and church music composed in his roles as violinist and maestro di cappella. He died in Florence in 1768.
Veracini’s harmonically adventurous and formally forward-looking style, evident especially in his 1716 violin sonatas, has led scholars such as Manfred Bukofzer to describe his music as anticipating the end of the Baroque era, while contemporaries reportedly found his innovations so unconventional as to seem eccentric. Though much of his output has been lost, his surviving violin sonatas are recognized for their historical importance in the transition toward Classical style and continue to be performed by specialists in Baroque violin repertoire.
