Dire Straits was a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals, guitar), his brother David Knopfler, John Illsley, and Pick Withers. Known for Mark Knopfler’s distinctive fingerpicked guitar style, the band rose to fame with ‘Sultans of Swing’ and reached massive global success with the 1985 album ‘Brothers in Arms,’ which sold over 30 million copies.

Dire Straits sold 100–120 million records worldwide, won four Grammy Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018; ‘Brothers in Arms’ also helped popularize the compact disc format.
