Dénes Várjon was born in 1968 and studied at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest from 1984 to 1991 under Sándor Falvai, György Kurtág and Ferenc Rados, later attending masterclasses with András Schiff. He has been Principal Professor in the Kronberg Academy study programmes since 2018 and is also a professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy, where since 2019 he has led a complete-works live concert series devoted to Schumann’s chamber music.

Várjon has recorded extensively for ECM, Naxos, Capriccio and Hungaroton in repertoire ranging from Beethoven and Schumann to Berg, Janáček and Ravel, including recent releases with violinist Antje Weithaas and his wife, pianist Izabella Simon. His honors include the Concours Géza Anda (1991), the Franz Liszt Prize (1997), the Bartók-Pásztory Award (2016) and the Kossuth Prize (2020), Hungary’s highest cultural honor, marking him as one of Hungary’s leading pianists.
