David Gates is an American singer-songwriter from Tulsa, Oklahoma, best known as the frontman and principal songwriter of the soft rock band Bread, which he formed with Jimmy Griffin and Robb Royer around 1968. Before Bread’s success, he worked in Los Angeles as a session musician and producer.

Gates wrote most of Bread’s hit singles during the 1970s soft-rock era, and his compositions have been covered by artists ranging from Frank Sinatra to Boy George, cementing his legacy as one of soft rock’s foremost songwriters.
