Diana Damrau is a German soprano born 31 May 1971 in Günzburg, Bavaria. Educated at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, she made her operatic debut in 1995 and rose through engagements in Würzburg, Mannheim, and Frankfurt before beginning a freelance international career in 2002 that has taken her to the Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera, where she appeared in twelve consecutive seasons following her 2005/06 debut.

A celebrated coloratura specialist whose signature roles include the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, and Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Damrau later expanded into heavier 19th-century Italian bel canto roles such as Violetta in La traviata. She has recorded extensively for EMI/Virgin Classics and Erato, was invested as a Bavarian Kammersängerin, and received the Bavarian Order of Merit and the German Order of Merit; an asteroid, 33034 Dianadamrau, was named in her honor in 2020.
