Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (25 January 1927 – 8 December 1994), known as Tom Jobim, was a Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist, songwriter, arranger and singer. He is considered one of the founding figures of bossa nova, having fused samba rhythms with cool jazz harmony beginning in the late 1950s. His song “Garota de Ipanema” (“The Girl from Ipanema”) has been recorded over 240 times and is among the most recorded popular songs in history.
Jobim’s 1964 collaboration with Stan Getz and João Gilberto, Getz/Gilberto, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and helped bring bossa nova to a global audience. His songs, including Inútil Paisagem, remain central to both the Brazilian popular song and jazz/guitar standard repertoires.
