Dilermando dos Santos Reis (1916–1977) was a Brazilian guitarist, composer and teacher, born in Guaratinguetá, São Paulo. He became one of the finest acoustic guitarists of his generation, a master of Brazilian choro as well as Latin, Spanish and classical guitar styles. His first recordings, the waltz “Noite de Lua” and the choro “Magoado,” were released in 1941, launching a prolific career during which he recorded roughly 100 of his own compositions. He also taught guitar throughout his life, with students including guitarists Bola Sete, Nicanor Teixeira, and Darcy Vila Verde, as well as the daughter of former Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek. He died in Rio de Janeiro in 1977.
Reis is remembered as one of the central figures of Brazilian popular guitar music, and several of his compositions, including “Dois Destinos” and “Se Ela Perguntar,” became enduring standards of the national repertoire. His piece “Uma Valsa e Dois Amores” exemplifies the lyrical, melodically rich waltz-choro style for which he is celebrated, and his output continues to be widely performed and recorded by classical and popular guitarists in Brazil and abroad.
