Biography (read more)

Patrick Hemmerlé is a French pianist based in Cambridge, England. He trained at the Paris Conservatoire under Billy Eidi, and received further instruction from Graham Scott, Ventsislav Yankoff, Éric Heidsieck and Joaquín Soriano. He is a laureate of international piano competitions in Valencia, Toledo, Épinal, Grosseto and Paris.

He is Musician-in-Residence and a Fellow Commoner at Clare Hall, Cambridge, where he is artistic director of the college’s Intimate Engagements concert series. He performs across Europe and in China and the United States, and gives masterclasses and lecture-recitals in the United Kingdom and France; his musicological background has also made him a frequent university lecturer.

Hemmerlé is known for the design of his programmes as much as for his playing. He performs complete cycles in a single evening and pairs works across centuries in double recitals — most conspicuously a project setting Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier beside Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer’s Ariadne musica. The complete Chopin Études and Bach’s forty-eight preludes and fugues are both in his regular concert repertoire.

The other strand of his work is advocacy for composers who are seldom played. He has taken up Vítězslav Novák, Jean Roger-Ducasse, Nikolai Tchesnokov and Frank Martin, introducing them in concert, on disc and through his YouTube channel, and several of his five released CDs are given over to that repertoire. He also speaks to audiences from the platform and writes his own programme notes, treating structure and interpretive context as part of what a recital delivers.
