Chantal Stigliani is a French pianist of Venetian descent. She completed her studies at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, and her formative teacher was Yvonne Lefébure, who had known Debussy, Ravel, Dukas, Maurice Emmanuel and Raoul Dufy and passed that testimony on to her students. Stigliani won first prize at the Claude Debussy international piano competition in 1975.

She has performed as a recitalist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Italy and the United Kingdom, appearing regularly at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. She gives master classes in France, Greece and Bulgaria and has taught as a guest at the University of South Florida and the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo. She founded Philomuses, an association whose motto is to be at the service of arts in all their forms and which organises concerts, exhibitions and theatrical and poetry evenings, and Pyxis, which supports the professional development of emerging artists; she also runs early-learning workshops for children in which theatre, art history, music, mime and the plastic arts alternate. In 2017 she was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

Bach is the centre of Stigliani’s work: the inventions, a partita, the English suites, concertos and the flute sonatas, and a recording of the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier played on a modern concert grand rather than a period instrument. Her Bach has been described as liberated from conventional formats and attitudes, and she has a declared interest in rarely performed works.

Her other substantial recording project is the complete piano music of Paul Dukas for Naxos, a body of work with few competing versions; her Bach recordings have appeared on the Solstice, Chevrillon-Philip and Arcobaleno labels. Through Yvonne Lefébure she stands in a direct line of transmission from the generation that made the French style, and both her teaching and Philomuses are explicitly framed as passing that inheritance on.
