Jan Lisiecki was born on 23 March 1995 in Calgary, Canada, to a Polish family, and began piano lessons at age five, making his orchestral debut at nine. He graduated from Western Canada High School in an accelerated program and studied at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto on a full scholarship, becoming a Deutsche Grammophon recording artist from age 15.

Lisiecki made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 20 in 2016 to critical acclaim from The New York Times, and has made subscription debuts with major orchestras including the Cleveland, Boston, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco symphonies. His Chopin recordings earned the Diapason d’Or Découverte (2010) and a Juno Award (2018); he was the youngest-ever recipient of Gramophone’s Young Artist of the Year award (2013), received the Leonard Bernstein Award at 18, and won an Echo Klassik award in 2017.
