Gautier Capuçon was born in Chambéry, France, in 1981 and began cello at age four. He trained at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris under Philippe Muller, graduating in 2000 with first prizes in cello and chamber music, and pursued advanced study with Heinrich Schiff in Vienna. Early in his career he performed with the European Union Youth Orchestra and Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester under conductors such as Bernard Haitink and Claudio Abbado.
Capuçon won prizes including the André Navarra Competition (1999) and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award (2004), and received the Victoires de la Musique Classique New Talent award in 2001. He has recorded extensively, first for Virgin Classics and later Erato/Warner, earning multiple ECHO Klassik awards, and performs on prestigious instruments including a 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello. He is now regarded as one of the foremost cellists of his generation, performing worldwide as soloist and chamber musician (including with his brother, violinist Renaud Capuçon) and teaching at the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s Classe d’Excellence.
