Biography (read more)
Carl Czerny was an Austrian composer, pianist, and pedagogue of Czech descent, active in Vienna during the late Classical and early Romantic periods, where he lived for essentially his entire life. A pupil of Beethoven and later teacher of Franz Liszt, he produced an enormous catalogue of over a thousand works, including piano sonatas, variations, symphonies, and chamber and sacred music, but he is remembered above all for his systematic studies and études—such as The School of Velocity and The Art of Finger Dexterity—that shaped piano pedagogy. He never married, and died in Vienna in 1857 at the age of 66, leaving his estate to charitable and musical institutions.
Czerny is regarded as one of the principal architects of modern piano technique, and his exercises remain a cornerstone of piano instruction worldwide more than a century and a half after his death. Through his teaching of Liszt and his writings documenting Beethoven’s performance practice, his pedagogical lineage extended through later master teachers such as Theodor Leschetizky, shaping generations of concert pianists.
