Biography (read more)
Sulkhan Tsintsadze was a Georgian composer of the Soviet period, born and largely based in Tbilisi after studies in Moscow from 1945 to 1953, and later rector of the Tbilisi State Conservatory from 1965 to 1984. His output centers on chamber music, especially twelve string quartets and miniatures drawing on Georgian folk themes, alongside symphonies, operas, ballets, and film scores that blend Georgian national idioms with Russian and Soviet compositional conventions. He died in Tbilisi in September 1991 and is buried at the Didube Pantheon.
Tsintsadze is regarded as one of the leading figures in establishing a distinctive 20th-century Georgian classical idiom, weaving indigenous folk material into Western chamber and orchestral forms; he was honored with the Stalin Prize (1950) and named People’s Artist of the USSR (1988). Through his long tenure shaping Georgian musical education, he influenced successive generations of Georgian composers, and his string quartets and folk-based miniatures remain the most frequently performed part of his output.
