Biography (read more)

Missy Mazzoli is an American composer of contemporary classical music, born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, and educated in Boston, at Yale, and in The Hague before establishing her career in New York City, with later residencies in Chicago and Philadelphia. Her output centers on opera—including Breaking the Waves (2016) and Proving Up—alongside chamber and orchestral music and electro-acoustic work with the band Victoire, which she co-founded as keyboardist. In 2018 she became one of the first two women commissioned to write an opera for the Metropolitan Opera.

Mazzoli is widely regarded as one of the most inventive composers working in the United States today, praised by the New York Times as “consistently inventive and surprising,” and her opera Breaking the Waves won the 2017 Music Critics Association Award for Best New Opera. Beyond composing, she has worked to expand opportunities for underrepresented composers through the Luna Composition Lab, which she co-founded with Ellen Reid in 2016 to mentor young female and non-binary composers.
