Biography (read more)
Johann David Heinichen was a German composer of the late Baroque period, born in Teuchern and trained in Leipzig. He worked in Weissenfels before spending several years in Venice, absorbing Italian operatic style, and from 1717 served as court composer in Dresden, where he remained until his death. His output includes operas, orchestral concertos, sacred music such as cantatas and passion oratorios, and an influential treatise on thoroughbass. He died in Dresden in 1729 of tuberculosis.
Heinichen is credited as an early theorist of the circle of fifths and played a key role in transmitting Venetian instrumental and operatic style to the Dresden court, where his pupils included the violinist and composer Johann Georg Pisendel. Long obscure after his death, his music has attracted renewed scholarly and performance interest since the 1990s, with period-instrument ensembles increasingly recording his concertos and sacred works.
