Biography (read more)
Orazio Michi, known as Michi dell’Arpa, was an Italian composer and virtuoso harpist of the early Baroque period, born in Alife, Campania, and active for most of his career in Rome. He is remembered chiefly for his instrumental harp pieces and vocal chamber works, including “Piangete, afflitti lumi” and the lullaby “Ninna nanna al bambino Gesù.” He died in Rome in 1641.
As one of the leading harp virtuosos of seventeenth-century Rome, Michi contributed to the early development of idiomatic solo harp writing and vocal chamber music in the Roman Baroque style. Though he remains a relatively obscure figure outside specialist circles, his surviving pieces continue to attract interest from early-music performers, including recordings by artists such as Philippe Jaroussky and Andrew Lawrence-King.
