Biography (read more)
Giovanni Felice Sances was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, born around 1600, who worked in Rome, Bologna, Venice, and Padua before moving to Vienna in 1636, where he served the imperial court chapel as a tenor, later becoming vice-Kapellmeister in 1649 and Imperial Kapellmeister in 1669. His output includes operas, oratorios, sepolcri, sacred works, motets, masses, cantatas, and chamber music. He died in Vienna in 1679 after a period of declining health from 1673 onward.
Sances was well regarded across Europe in his lifetime and, alongside Antonio Bertali, helped establish regular performances of Italian opera at the Habsburg court, making him a significant figure in Vienna’s musical life during the mid-Baroque period. He is remembered today primarily by specialists in early Baroque vocal and sacred music rather than in the mainstream concert repertoire.
