Gustavo Adolfo Dudamel Ramírez (born January 26, 1981) is a Venezuelan conductor who rose through El Sistema, Venezuela’s social music education program, initially training as a violinist at the Jacinto Lara Conservatory before studying conducting under José Antonio Abreu and Rodolfo Saglimbeni. In 1999 he became music director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, and in 2004 he won the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition, which launched his international career. He became music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009 and in 2017 became the youngest conductor to lead the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert; he is slated to become Music and Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic starting in 2026, the first Latin American to hold that post.

Dudamel is one of the most prominent conductors of his generation and a global ambassador for El Sistema, having shown how a state-funded youth music program can produce world-class talent and advocating for music education as a social force.
