U2 is an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976, consisting of Bono (vocals), the Edge (guitar, keyboards), Adam Clayton (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums). The band broke through internationally with albums such as War (1983) and especially The Joshua Tree (1987), blending anthemic rock with socially and politically conscious lyrics. Over five decades they have repeatedly reinvented their sound, from post-punk beginnings through 1990s electronic experimentation to stadium-scale arena rock.

U2 is one of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed rock bands in history, with 22 Grammy Awards, and is widely credited with keeping arena rock politically and socially engaged.
