White Lion is an American glam metal and hard rock band formed in New York City in 1983 by Danish-born vocalist Mike Tramp, best known for its classic lineup with guitarist Vito Bratta. Their 1987 album Pride went double platinum and produced the hit singles “Wait” and “When the Children Cry,” the latter notable for addressing serious social themes like child poverty and apartheid rather than typical glam-metal subject matter. The band split in 1991 but has reunited sporadically since, with Tramp revisiting the catalog in later solo projects.

White Lion stood out among 1980s glam metal acts for pairing radio-friendly hard rock hooks with socially conscious lyrics, and “When the Children Cry” remains a genre staple.
