American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, by Kurt Cobain (vocals/guitar) and Krist Novoselic (bass), with Dave Grohl joining on drums in 1990. Their three studio albums — Bleach (1989), Nevermind (1991), and In Utero (1993) — fused punk aggression with pop songcraft, and the single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” became a generational anthem. The band disbanded after Cobain’s death in April 1994.

Nirvana broke grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream, ending the dominance of glam/hair metal and reshaping 1990s rock; they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and have sold over 75 million records worldwide.
