Biography (read more)

Monika Rost, a German guitarist and lutenist, was born in Dresden on 21 February 1943. She attended the Musikgymnasium Schloss Belvedere in Weimar, then studied guitar with Ursula Peter and composition with Johann Cilenšek and Werner Hübschmann at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt. She later worked there for more than 20 years as professor of guitar and for almost 10 years as head of the guitar institute. Alongside her teaching she led masterclasses in Europe and the United States. She retired in 2008.

Her pupils include Nora Buschmann, Samuel and Laura Klemke, Christian Rosenau and Tomasz Zawierucha. Her successor Christiane Spannhof said she toured as a soloist or in duo with her husband Jürgen Rost in countries including Bulgaria, France, Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Syria, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In 1972 she won first prize at Radio France’s Concours International de la Guitare in Paris. The Gitarreverein Weimar, founded in 1992 on her and Jürgen Rost’s initiative, organises the biennial Anna Amalia Competition.
