Johannes Öllinger was born in 1981 in Gräfelfing and grew up in Bad Kötzting, Germany. He studied concert guitar from 2003 to 2006 at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin and subsequently at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, with Daniel Göritz and Jürgen Ruck.
Öllinger won first prize at the Bundeswettbewerb Jugend Musiziert (2000) and third prize at the IV. Concorso Internazionale “Ruggero Chiesa” (2008), and received the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize in 2017. He performs widely as a soloist and chamber musician with ensembles specializing in contemporary music, including Ensemble Resonanz, Ascolta and the Ensemble Modern Orchestra, and co-founded the contemporary-focused guitar duo steuber.öllinger with Martin Steuber.
