Luiz Floriano Bonfá was a Brazilian guitarist and composer, born 17 October 1922 in Rio de Janeiro and died 12 January 2001 in Rio de Janeiro. Largely self-taught, he began performing professionally as a teenager and became one of the leading guitarists of Brazilian popular music by mid-century, closely associated with the emergence of bossa nova alongside contemporaries such as João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim.
Bonfá is best remembered for his score to the 1959 film Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro), including the songs “Manhã de Carnaval” and “Samba de Orfeu,” which helped introduce Brazilian guitar music to international audiences and remain widely performed and recorded today.
