Biography (read more)
Jorge Morel, born Jorge Scibona (1931–2021), was an Argentine classical guitarist and composer. Taught the rudiments of guitar by his father from age seven, he studied at the academy of Pablo Escobar in Buenos Aires before leaving Argentina to perform across Latin America, eventually settling in New York, where he made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1961 and became a fixture of the city’s jazz and classical scenes, sharing bills at the Village Gate with musicians such as Erroll Garner and Stan Kenton.
Morel expanded the classical guitar repertoire by blending Latin American rhythms with jazz harmony, and his compositions and arrangements have been recorded by guitarists including John Williams, the Assad Brothers, and Christopher Parkening, cementing his place as one of the most performed Latin American guitarist-composers of the 20th century.
