Marco Antônio Pereira (born 25 September 1950 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian guitarist, composer, and arranger. He studied guitar with the Uruguayan master Isaías Sávio, who brought Miguel Llobet’s technique to Brazil, and later earned a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Paris-Sorbonne with a thesis on Heitor Villa-Lobos’s guitar works. He is a professor in the composition department at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and founded the guitar program at the University of Brasília in 1986.
Pereira has recorded seventeen albums under his own name, several released internationally, and has collaborated with major Brazilian artists including Gilberto Gil, Edu Lobo, and Zélia Duncan. His compositions, including the frevo Pixaim, are widely performed in the Brazilian guitar repertoire and reflect his synthesis of Brazilian popular idioms with classical guitar writing.
