Biography (read more)

Guido Antonio Santórsola (18 November 1904 – 24 September 1994) was an Italian-born composer, violinist, violist, viola d’amore player and conductor. Born in Canosa di Puglia, Italy, his family settled in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1909, and he later moved to Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1931, where he remained for the rest of his life and career.

Santórsola wrote across nearly every genre — orchestral, vocal, chamber and concerto works — but is remembered by guitarists above all for his numerous compositions for the instrument, which blend Brazilian and Uruguayan folk idioms with modernist technique. His four numbered guitar sonatas, including the Sonata No. 4 “Italiana” (1977), remain part of the standard 20th-century South American guitar repertoire.
